Book Review

Last week I finished reading The Host by Stephenie Meyer. I really loved the Twilight Series that she published and can't wait for the fourth book Breaking Dawn to come out in August. So, when The Host came out I wanted to go out and buy it right away. (I'm glad that I waited until the library had a copy for me.) The book is over 600 pages. I read it in about 4 days. I can't say it was a page turner for me like the Twilight books were, but I did enjoy it. I would say that it was very intriguing. I think it could have been a little shorter. I mean 600+ pages is quite a lot of reading. I don't think I will ever read it again. I just don't think it was a "wow" book.

The concept behind the book is really bizarre and I wonder where the author got it from. It is about aliens. (Yah, I know what you are thinking. Why am I reading a book about aliens?) Aliens who have come to earth and taken over our bodies. Melanie, a human, that is part of the "resistance" is captured by the aliens and a "host" alien, Wanderer is placed into her body. The job of the host is basically to take control, but Melanie's soul won't let her. Wanderer develops a sort of relationshiop with Melanie. Wanderer can talk to Melanie kind of like a double personality. She even has Melanie's memories, and Wanderer starts to fall in love with Melanie's family and wants to be a part of them. But Wanderer can't because she is an alien. Wanderer becomes really conflicted about who and what she is. Human or alien?
I won't give away the whole book, mostly it would take a while too, but just in case someone else wants to read it I won't spoil it.

The new book that I am reading is called "The Healthiest Kid In The Neighborhood: Ten Ways To Get Your Family On The Right Nutritional Track". Right now it kind of makes me feel like a bad parent. I don't feed my kids all junk and processed foods, but they do eat more than they should. I would love to try and feed them only "pure foods" (non-processed, factory foods) but I don't think that would be really easy and I don't think Nathan would go for it either. I mean who wants to give up hydrogenated fats, enriched white flour, and high fructose sugar completely. I mean, really, who doesn't eat it? They are in everything! We do eat our fair share of the good stuff, my kids love brocolli and asparagus, and who can get their kids to eat that stuff? I know the "pure foods" would be best for us. I would like to try harder, we will just see what ends up happening. And I will be sure to make a post when I finish reading it completely.

Hydrogenated fats and high fructose corn syrup-yum yum:) Also, if you are looking for a good future read try "Modoc". I just finished it and it was wonderful-a true story as well.

I'm sorry you weren't blown away by the book! I really liked it. I actually think it's the best book she's put out so far.

i know how you feel about the nutrition thing- slowly but surely, we are deleting sugar and white flour. but, come on- no ice cream? that's no life at all! :)
