Colic?

So, my poor little Jonathan is having a hard time adjusting to life outside the womb. Yesterday was an awesome day. He nursed really well and had two four hour naps, one in the morning and one at night. I was able to get so much done. The vacumming that hadn't been done in over a week, and the laundry was washed, dryed and actually folded. Usually the folding happens days after the drying. I was so happy. But most days his naps are 30 minutes to an hour, and then he wakes up screaming. He never wakes up cooing, happy or just content. I can't figure out if he thinks he just needs to be held all the time, or if he is hungry cause feeding him every hour doesn't seem to help. Sometimes it seems to be that he needs to burp or pass gas. Today he has been spitting up and he acts like he is trying to poop but can't get it out (and he hasn't pooped very much compared to what he takes in, I'm just waiting for the "big one"). Nights tend to be the worse. No matter how early we start he just won't go to sleep until 10:30/11:00 and he is cranky and crying that whole time too. Even if he falls asleep and we swaddle him and put him in his crib, he wakes up 15 minutes later. I'm not sure what to do, and Nathan and I are both really frusturated.

Does he have colic? Is he over tired? Is he hungry and I'm not making enough milk because of I'm tired and sick? Is he just being a newborn? Is there anybody who has the answer to my questions, or an idea of what I could do to help him fall asleep and stay there. I'm so frusturated, when does this stage end?!

It sounds like how Sadie was and our first doctor told us that she was just a newborn and she would grow out of it, well it kept getting worse and for other reason as well we changed doctors and our new Pediatrician told us that she has Acid reflux and so they put her on Zantac and she was a completly different baby after that. She was not fussy at nights and she would go right to bed after feeding her and she was and is now just so much happier. So that could be a possibility? Each child is different, but I would maybe ask your doctor about it! Good luck and I hope it gets better for you. Also for the gas problems have you tried Mylicon? You probably have, but that helps too.

I hope you dont mind me leaving a comment.. I'm an old high school friend of Charis' and I just kinda bounce around blogs all day at work while I'm bored!! :)
My baby is 8 weeks tomorrow and I too have had a HORRIBLE first 2 month.. he was completely unconsolable during his first few months. With symptoms a lot like you explain with your little guy. Except my baby NEVER slept.. maybe 20-30 minutes at a time.. 24 hours a day! he just always seems so uncomfortable.
A couple thing have made a little bit of difference for us.. I bought a pump. (Kinda a big investment) But it helps to make sure he's getting enough milk..
All the research I did made me think he had reflux.. my doctor wasnt so sure.. but i made him at least let us try medication.
He has been on Prevacid for almost 2 weeks and it has made a world of difference. He isnt perfect by any means.. but he has calmed down a little.
If you do go the route of reflux.. make sure you get a prescription for prevacid. not zantac or anything else.. it is the best and will make the most difference..
in the mean time.. feel free to come read my blog.. misery loves company right?? :) at least you wont feel alone.....

I think this may just be a newborn stage...at least for a couple more weeks. Then, I would maybe have the doctor check for Acid Reflux? A friend's baby had these same things, was diagnosed with acid reflux and put on some medicine- at it made 100% difference! Good luck!

Abby was quite cranky for the first few months as well. Her weight gain wasn't what it should be so our doctor had us supplement the breast feeding with formula and at that point she became a different baby. I had always suspected she was hungry and that did the trick! I worried that she'd not want to nurse anymore. She was never a great nurser, but the bottles did so much for her disposition, it was worth it!

We too had to put Cole on Zantac for acid reflux. He was spitting a lot and never seemed at peace after eating - he just cried and squirmed like he was in pain. I know that things will get better soon, but it's always worth it to ask your doctor. PS - love the picture!

If you are worried about making enough milk try Fenugreek supplements found at health food stores. According to a lot of friends around here who ave tried it, it really boosts your milk poduction and it is completely safe. Good luck! I'm sorry. Has Nate given both of you a blessing? I know that really helped me right after Miles was born.
