More construction....

I found out today through our local news station, KSL, that our city, Sandy, is going to be doing more construction. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=4115040 First of all, for those of you who aren't from Utah, you must know that Utah is the construction capital of the world, and that orange cones are in full season year round. And now you want to know why I am blogging about this. Well, the reason is that I am beyond words, and totally TICKED OFF! It's a 30 million dollar project to improve 1300 E from 7800 South to 106000 South (about 3 miles I would guess). All but 6 million is federally funded, and our Representative Jim Matheson was there with the Mayor to proudly announce this. Nathan says this is "government pork" and that Rep. Matheson "brought home the bacon". I guess road construction and trying to improve roads is a noble cause, but there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with 1300 East! They aren't even widening the roads! They are putting up more sound barriers (pretty ones, I might add), bike lanes, sidewalks (which we already have) and a middle lane barrier (with pretty little trees) so that people can't turn left and block traffic. The central barrier thing is pretty funny too seeing as how there is a middle lane there so that people CAN'T block traffic, and all it will do is make people flip U-turns at the lights so that they can get into their neighborhoods which is more dangerous. Our Mayor claims that 1300 E sees a lot of traffic everyday, over "45,000" cars, and is "one of the busiest streets" in our state. "Yah, so, what's your point Mayor." I have never had a problem going to the store or the library, and have never seen a "traffic problem". So, now for the next couple of years (3-4 I heard, but I couldn't find it in the article) my way to the store and library will be congested and I will be forced to be more creative to get where I am going so that 1300 E can be pretty. And I am NOT happy about it!

That is totally ridiculous! I cannot believe that they feel the need to redo that stretch of the road. I can think of a million other roads that actually need to be worked on. I agree that there isn't anything wrong with it, except that they're currently making a big mess. Aarrgghh! They should finish the other roads and projects before investing more time and money into a project that is not totally necessary.
