Digital TV

The big day is Friday. If you don't know what I am talking about, then where have you been. Friday is the day that analog television will no longer exist and we will be forced to watch digital. Not that that is a bad thing. The picture sure is a lot nicer. But what I don't get, and what my husband has been trying to help me understand, is why we really need digital. And why is the government involved? Why does the government care whether or not tv is digital or not? My theory is, is that it is all about MONEY! Money, money, money. Lets make everyone by a digital converter (which the government has spent over $1 billion on to help us, isn't that nice) or spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy digital tv. It's not a big deal if you have cable or satelite which the majority of Americans do, but we don't. And I don't think we ever will. We don't need it. And if we ever did decide to get it, it would only be so that we could watch our beloved Utes during football season.

We've bought a tiny 19 inch digital tv and I am awaiting my "coupon" so that we can have a box for the family tv downstairs. We originally had a dvd/vcr recorder with a digital tuner in it, and it crapped out about a month ago. (DON'T buy RCA, we have had nothing but bad luck with their appliances!) So, we have already spend hundreds of dollars for something that I don't think should have been forced upon us. Do you think they will force digital radio next? It's a choice now, but will it be forever?

I guess I could just stop watching tv all together. Would I really miss anything?
What do you think about the digital transition? Are you ready?

I'm with you--I don't think I could pay for TV. We're ready for the switch, but some of our channels still won't work through the converter box. It all seems like a big, useless pain!
